Over 100 sport climbing routes as well as via ferratas and climbing gardens

Climbing on the Steinplatte

The rock on the Steinplatte has a unique quality and owes this to its history as the only dry reef in Europe. With a length of over 7 kilometers and a rock height of up to 250 meters, there are over 800 sport climbing routes in the climbing area around the Steinplatte and up to the Loferer Alm.

From difficulty levels 5a to 8c, from single-pitch to alpine multi-pitch (8SL) tours, from beginners to professionals and from spring to fall. Overall, the area is certainly one of the top areas in Central Europe: from the Waidringer Steinplatte to Wiesloch, Wemeteigen, Schwollwand, Sonnwand, Tanzboden and Urlkopf to the Lachfeldkopf, which is already in Salzburg, there are climbing opportunities par excellence.

In addition to the children's climbing wall in the Triassic Park for first attempts at climbing, the "Wintergarten" is a great climbing garden for all families and beginners. All climbing options can be easily reached by gondola or via the parking lot on the Steinplatte high-altitude road.

The St. Johanner Minipalven and Palven areas with routes from the 5th level of difficulty are also very suitable for families with children or climbing beginners.

Climbing routes perfect for all climbing fans

  • NOTE: You climb exclusively at your own risk and are responsible for your own safety. The routes may only be climbed by experienced persons and with appropriate via ferrata equipment. Sure-footedness and a head for heights are required.
  • Wieslochsteig (3.5 hours, 530 vertical meters, difficulty B): Via the Stallenalm and Grünwaldalm, continue along the lower trail to the "Kopfkrax" junction. Here the trail branches off to the left and, passing beautiful viewpoints, you have the option of choosing between an easier and a more difficult trail, both of which lead to the summit of the Steinplatte.
  • Gamssteig (2 hours, 100 vertical meters, difficulty C): This climb leads directly from the Triassic Beach area, a short but steep descent. It is usually used as an access route for the Schuastagangl via ferrata. If you want to do a circular tour, hike along the rock face via the Stallenalm and Grünwaldalm and return to the Steinplatte via this trail.
  • Schuastagangl (3 hours, 180 vertical meters, difficulty C): The classic on the Steinplatte, where you are rewarded with wonderful panoramic views. You can reach the start of the via ferrata either via the Gamssteig or via the Stallenalm and Grünwaldalm. The approach is via the signposted path at the foot of the rock face. This via ferrata has some tricky passages and airy sections, but is also suitable for beginners and families in the medium difficulty level C. The additional "Knieschladerer" variant is a little more airy and you return to the normal route via a rope bridge. The route leads to the summit of the Steinplatte. Click here for the digital map.
